Sloan Limited Partners (SLP) offers a variety of data and media conversion services.
These include optical platter conversions and data migrations as well as an end-to-end
tape copy and a conversion solution that easily converts media from one format to
another or enables the migration of your entire library to a new media technology. We
also offer data eradication services as well as backup platform conversions for most of the
popular backup software products on the market.
Our services are usually performed at our secure, 8000 square foot facility in Houston
using our own proprietary software and hardware and provide an additional cost savings
to customers. However, we can also perform these same services at the client’s request,
working off-line at the client site (meaning no connection to the client’s system or
applications), by utilizing our proprietary software and hardware devices, resulting in
virtually no usage of client CPU time and minimal impact on day-to-day operations.
The advantage of our migration technology over our competition is that we can migrate
client data to newer technologies FASTER and CHEAPER than anyone else and without
impacting the client’s production environment. No one else can make this claim. Most
projects can be completed in 90 days or less because we are fully automated and can run

Tape Copy and Conversion Services:
Tape Cloning generates an exact copy of any active tape volume onto a new tape volume
of the same media type.
Tape Duplication generates a block-for-block copy of any active tape volume onto a new
tape volume of a different media type.
Tape Volume Stacking stacks multiple active tape volumes (a volume-set) onto one or
more new tape volumes of a different media type.
Dataset Stacking enables multiple datasets from multiple volume-sets to be stacked onto
one or more new tape volumes of a different media type. Selective dataset stacking may
also be performed.
Batch TMS and OS Catalog Updates - Duplication, volume stacking, and dataset stacking
may change the logical and physical structures of the old volume-sets if the new media is
of a different type and/or multiple volume-sets are combined onto a reduced number of
media volumes. If these tape volumes are under control of a tape management system
(TMS), updates must be made to the TMS database and OS catalogs to ensure data
integrity. SLP Media Conversions’ Tape Copy and Conversion services automatically
analyzes the information contained in the customer’s TMS database for the volume-sets to
be stacked and seamlessly combines them with the new information coming from the
stacking operations to generate all input data needed to update both the TMS databases
and the OS catalogs. This makes the off-line nature of the stacking services transparent
to both the TMS and OS catalogs. Most popular TMS’ are supported, including CA-1,
RMM, and TLMS.
Tape Volume Management Services:
Tape Labeling and Initialization – SLP Media Conversions can accurately pre-label and
pre-initialize your tapes with the Volume Serial number (VOLSER) for a fraction of the cost
in client CPU time alone. We offer more than 20 standard volume labels and any
customization needed to meet your data center’s exact requirements. In addition to fast
turnaround, we guarantee the external and internal labels will match. These labeled and
initialized tapes are then ready to be entered into the appropriate automated tape libraries
for immediate use as active volumes. We can perform these services either on-site or at
our secure site.
Tape Label Verification- verifies the external and internal labels are matching on active or
pre-initialized tape cartridges and is designed to identify tape cartridges with mismatching
external and internal Volume Serial numbers by real-time scanning of the barcode label
followed by reading of the internally recorded label.
Document, Check & Image Archive Migration Services:
SLP Media Conversions offers a complete off-line data migration solution that enables
customers to convert existing archives onto new, cost-effective high-capacity media and
generate new archives from legacy media formats. Our services may be performed on-
site and off-line utilizing our proprietary software and stand-alone SCSI attached hardware
devices, resulting in virtually no usage of client CPU time and minimal impact on day-to-
day operations. Or, SLP Media Conversions can handle all archiving and data migration
operations at our secure facility in Houston, Texas for an additional cost savings.
Report Archive Migration / Conversion Service - SLP Media Conversions extracts
documents (statements and reports) archived by COLD and other applications on optical
platters (e.g. 5.25”, 12”, 14”) or other media without the creating application. The
extracted documents are then written in the targeted format directly or a format suitable
for import into the online viewing application. Migrated data may be supplied to the
customer on their choice of media along with metadata. Documents Archives such as IBM
On-Demand, Mobius InfoPac, COOL, SystemWare, FileNet, FileTek, CA-View, Kodak
AXCIS, AMASS, GIGAPAGE, InfoImage and others are supported.
Check Image Migration / Conversion Service - Our service extracts check images and
associated MICR information archived by a variety of applications on optical cartridges (e.
g. 5.25”, 12", 14”) or backup tapes. Each check is validated against the legacy system log
file or database, and both front and back images of each check are properly rotated and
saved as a multipart TIFF file. The checks are then written to the targeted format directly
or a format suitable for import into the online viewing application. Migrated data may be
supplied to the customer on their choice of media along with metadata. Check Archives
such as Banctec, Imagesoft, DSI, CheckVision and CheckSolutions, and others are
supported.
Image Archive Migration / Conversion Service - This service extracts images archived by
applications on optical platters (the process is driven by a database which provides the
locations of each document on the platter). The document images are validated and
converted into TIFF files (or other image formats), which are then written to the customer’s
choice of media and format. An output database is generated during the conversion,
which maps each document to the generated image files.
Data Eradication Services:
SLP Media Conversions offers a data eradication service to help companies address the
many privacy and confidentiality regulations that currently prevent high capacity media
from being reused or sold. By providing several data eradication options, we are able to
help companies with large quantities of expensive media with an ability to reuse this media
internally or sell it in the open market to help offset the cost of newer media.
We provide three forms of Data Eradication.
1. Data Security Erase: The most commonly used method, whereby 100% of the tape
is overwritten with a random pattern of 1’s and 0’s from the beginning of tape to the logical
end of tape using large blocks.
2. Encrypted Overwrite: Encrypted overwrite of 100% of the client data using a 40,000
+bit encryption technology from the beginning of tape to the logical end of tape. Using an
encrypted over-write method, we can also verify the media still meets the established ANSI
read and write specifications. The data pattern used for encryption and the final
disposition of the encryption key used is left up to the client.
3. Standard Overwrite: Standard overwrite of 100% of the client data using a fixed
pattern of data from the beginning of tape to the logical end of tape using large blocks.
Using this over-write method, we can also verify the media still meets the established ANSI
read and write specifications.
Backup Conversion Services:
SLP Media Conversions offers a backup conversion service to assist companies with
migrating old backup tapes to newer, fat tape media or from a previously used backup
platform to any of the newer backup products currently in the market. This allows
companies to avoid the expense and headache of maintaining multiple backup platforms
and paying for additional software licenses, hardware and the support staff necessary to
keep the old platform working.
We restore customer data to disk from their existing backup media and then backup the
same data using the software product they are currently using and media of their choice.
In addition and where possible, we provide updates to their database to incorporate the
new media into their current backup system so that it is available for use should someone
in their company request files to be restored.
Backup platforms that we support include Symantec, VERITAS, CommVault, IBM,
Computer Associates, EMC, Dantz, Bakbone, TAR, CPIO, and others.
